Sovereign Body Alchemy

A Journey into Movement, Manual Therapy, Anatomy, and Nervous System Integration

What if the way back to yourself isn't through more effort, but through listening?

Your body is not a problem to be solved. It is a living intelligence — speaking through sensation, rhythm, movement, and the subtle language of structure, tissue, and the nervous system.

Sovereign Body Alchemy is a deeply personalized practice that brings together manual therapy, functional movement, Pilates, Restorative Exercise, anatomy, breath, and nervous system awareness.

Through hands-on work and movement exploration, we listen to what your body is communicating and develop a deeper understanding of how you move, where you hold tension, how your nervous system responds, and what may help you feel more at home in yourself.

This is not about forcing your body into an ideal shape or movement pattern. It is about learning to listen, respond, integrate, and trust what you discover.

The Practice

This is a practice of inquiry — and it is also hands-on.

Sessions begin with listening: to your history, your experience, your movement, and your body's responses.

Bethany combines the Hendrickson Method, an advanced system of massage and manual therapy for addressing acute and chronic pain, with more than 20 years of experience in functional movement, including Pilates, Restorative Exercise, and extensive anatomical study. Her work synthesizes these modalities through decades of experience, allowing each session to respond to the person in front of her rather than following a predetermined formula.

Manual therapy may be used to address areas of pain or restriction, support greater ease in the tissues, and give you a new experience of how your body can move and feel. Movement then becomes a way to integrate that experience — helping you develop strength, mobility, coordination, awareness, and a more functional relationship with your body.

Together, hands-on work and movement create opportunities for nervous system repair and integration: developing greater capacity to sense, respond, adapt, and return to a state of greater ease.

The result is an alchemical approach to bodywork that can reduce pain, restore function, support nervous system repair and integration, and promote optimal health.

“Bethany helped me when I was starting to think it wasn’t possible.”

I had pain in my left thigh, hip, and knee for months after having a baby. It was inhibiting my ability to do daily activities. I saw multiple practitioners without relief. In the first session Bethany immediately identified the cause of my pain, and 90% of my pain resolved with the first treatment. I am definitely returning and would highly recommend her to anyone with musculoskeletal pain.

What We Explore

Every session is different because every body, history, and nervous system is different. Together, we may explore:

The goal isn't to perfect your body. It is to understand it — and to develop greater capacity to inhabit it.

“What stood out immediately was her depth of anatomical knowledge.”

I came to Bethany dealing with persistent jaw pain that my dentist couldn’t fully explain. She didn’t just work on the obvious area but approached the whole picture thoughtfully, addressing both the muscular and nerve components. The sessions brought real relief during what had been a frustrating and uncomfortable week. Highly recommend her if you’re dealing with anything beyond a straightforward knot.

— Dylan G.

“Bethany believes in movement for all bodies and all of the body.”

She uses massage to free body parts from the grisly imprisonment of fascia and exercises to awaken sleeping muscles to a new apex of joy in motion. Her fingers must have dipped in genius one night while she slept, dreaming of dancing upon the trade winds. She shares the realities of that dream with those lucky enough to be her clients.

I came to Bethany with a serial plague of swollen ankles, pain along the tops of my feet, throbbing toes and toe cramps, pain along the inner arches of my feet, and soreness on the balls of my feet after walking more than a block. I also had leg cramps at night. Who would want anything on that list? Especially someone who had walked a great deal of London, Manhattan, and Shanghai!

Bethany taught me exercises she had developed for strengthening the feet. When I was able to do them well and see results — no more swollen ankles! — she added more exercises that enabled me to do things with my feet I had never been able to do before.

The exercises were to be done daily and without fail. Gently, she put me in charge of my feet. Then she taught me more exercises, encouraging me with her warmth and laughter.

I could actually feel my feet come back to life. I could spend all day gardening without needing to soak in Epsom salts or take pills. I could walk wherever I wanted instead of driving. I could wear sandals as well as the very expensive walking shoes that had always made my feet ache unbearably.

Fashion aside (is it ever?), one is bombarded by articles about the importance of walking as exercise, and Bethany has made walking the pleasure in movement that it used to be. Thank you, Bethany!

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session creates a foundation for our work together.

  1. Conversation & intention. We begin with why you're here, what you're experiencing, and what you'd like to change or explore.
  2. Your personal history. We create a history map that may include movement experience, injuries, pain, major life events, and other factors that have shaped your relationship with your body and nervous system.
  3. Observation & assessment. As appropriate, we'll look at how you stand, breathe, move, organize your body, and respond to sensation.
  4. Manual therapy. Hands-on work using the Hendrickson Method and other integrated manual therapy techniques may be incorporated to address areas of pain, tension, restriction, or altered function.
  5. Movement exploration. We'll explore movement in relationship to what we discover through assessment and hands-on work.
  6. Nervous system integration. We'll create space for your system to process and integrate new sensory and movement experiences — through breathwork, meditation, gentle movement, visualization, or simply slowing down enough to notice what has changed.
  7. Your individualized practice. You'll leave with practical tools and movements tailored specifically to your body, your goals, and your capacity.
  8. Recap & next steps. We'll reflect on what you discovered and determine what would be most supportive moving forward.
  9. Follow-up. You'll receive a follow-up email with videos or other resources to support your practice between sessions.

Who This Work Is For

Mothers, artists, academics, athletes, movement professionals, skeptics.

You don't need to be experienced in Pilates or movement. You don't need to be flexible. You don't need to know what's “wrong.” You simply need curiosity about what might be possible.

“Not what’s best for everyone, but what is best for you.”

Bethany has the ability to look deeply into the body's tissues (some might say issues) to understand the unique structure of an individual. It is a gift that she uses to help people practice Pilates, to strengthen one's core muscles and extremities in the absolute best manner for that person. Not what's best for everyone but what is best for you.

She has helped me tremendously. I feel I know my body better now than ever before and can take better care of it as a result.

The Alchemy

There is a difference between being told what to do with your body and learning to listen to it.

This work brings together the intelligence of the hands with the intelligence of movement and the adaptive intelligence of the nervous system.

Manual therapy gives us a way to listen through touch. Movement gives us a way to explore and integrate. Anatomy gives us a language for understanding what we experience. Nervous system work gives us a framework for developing greater capacity to sense, respond, adapt, and integrate. And your own lived experience gives the work its direction.

Together, these become Sovereign Body Alchemy — a practice of reducing pain, restoring function, supporting nervous system repair and integration, and cultivating a more intimate relationship with the body you inhabit.

Bethany Drohmann

About Bethany

Bethany brings more than two decades of study and practice in movement, anatomy, Pilates, manual therapy, and embodied education. Her approach has evolved through years of working with real bodies — bodies that hurt, change, adapt, compensate, give birth, age, strengthen, and heal.

She brings that accumulated experience into every session, weaving hands-on manual therapy with movement and nervous system integration to help people develop greater ease, function, and embodied awareness.

“Bethany has an extensive and deep knowledge of the body's structure and the relationships among the parts.”

More importantly, she can size up an individual's problems and then apply her theoretical knowledge with an uncanny ability to find the right exercises to correct the dysfunction.

Client stories

“Bethany is always learning and is forever curious about how the body works.”

Bethany has been my Pilates trainer for five years, starting when she was living in the San Francisco Bay Area, and continuing whenever she’s back. She has a most reassuring understanding of my body’s quirks: my sway back, the violinist’s shoulders and neck, my touchy right hip, a performer’s stress places.

Training and working with her, I’ve had times with almost no aches and pains, which, for an active 70-year-old woman, is quite astonishing. I intend to continue working with Bethany whenever and wherever I can.

— Christine Macomber, Actor, Singer and Musician

“I feel stronger, more flexible, and more positive. This work is simple, profound, and deeply healing.”

— Marjie Houck, Midwife & Mother

“This work supported my entire self, not just my body.”

— Jennifer Gleeson Blue, Movement Teacher & Mother
